The First Ten Years

Our Story

Born in the Garage

"Like all good things, it started in a garage. I grew up snowboarding in the Canadian Rockies and dreamed of enjoying that powder-day feeling on my commute. After moving to California and a few years of tinkering with motors, batteries and control electronics on nights/weekends, I built a series of prototypes that turned my dream into reality. In 2013, I quit my engineering day job and went all-in to bring the Onewheel experience to the world."

We slimmed down the frame rails, which improved handling and maneuverability.

The first production Onewheel, which was complete with pressure-sensitive footpads, LED lights and a bluetooth-connected mobile app.

The first board with a Hypercore motor, which boosted the power.

Onewheel+ XR

With up to 18 miles per charge, XR allowed riders to go on longer adventures. Both on and off road.

Building the Movement

Since day 1, we set out to create a new boardsport. Unlike other tech toys of the day, Onewheels were meant to be ridden hard and riders chased new lines on aggressive terrain. Progression and that flow-state feeling kept riders coming back.

Newbies and pro boardsport riders alike fueled a culture that no hoverboard or e-scooter could ever match. Today, grassroots Onewheel events, competitions and group rides happen all over the world.

USA Built

Every single Onewheel has been built in the USA. Some people think we’re crazy for doing it, but we’ve always believed that it’s the best way to make reliable and high-quality boards.

Our manufacturing line in San Jose, CA, started with just some folding tables. Fast-forward to today and our facility is the largest light electric vehicle manufacturer in the entire US.

10 Awesome Years

Our core philosophy has always been "if it’s awesome, let's do it". That’s led to some epic times, like building a motorized wheelbarrow for April Fool's Day and creating an entire Racing League.

You can now spot the best Onewheel riders flying down ski runs on ESPN as they compete for $10,000.

Doing It Our Way

When you do something radically different, not everyone is going to understand it. And that’s okay. Some folks think that Onewheels are too risky and that they just don't belong on our streets or trails. But those people probably haven't ridden yet.

Our riders understand that, like all other boardsports, riding a Onewheel involves some risk. At their core, though, they know that the biggest risk of all is not taking one. Onewheel’s life-changing impact for its riders has been overwhelming and that makes us proud to keep building a rad future.
